
How Ignition Cylinders Fail — and Why It Matters
The ignition cylinder is the mechanical component your key physically enters and turns. Over time — and in The Bronx, 'over time' can mean years of temperature swings between brutal January freezes and August heat waves — the internal wafers, springs, and tumblers inside the cylinder wear down. Debris from keychains, broken-off key fragments, and general road grime can accelerate this wear significantly. The result is a cylinder that feels stiff, requires jiggling to turn, refuses to move to the ACC or START position, or traps the key entirely. In some cases, a worn cylinder stops sending the correct electrical signal to the ignition switch behind it, leaving the engine completely unresponsive even when the key turns.
It's important to understand that the ignition cylinder and the ignition switch are two different components. The cylinder is the part your key engages; the switch is the electrical contact assembly connected to it. Both can fail independently. Our technicians assess both during every ignition service call.
